In 2007, the federal government transferred ownership of the Port Dover Harbour Marina to Norfolk County. At first, the marina was successfully operated by the Port Dover Harbour Marina Board and then, late in 2008, solely by Norfolk County.
In September 2008, Norfolk County received an unsolicited offer from Alliance Homes to lease, expand and operate the Port Dover Harbour Marina with the option to purchase. The Association was founded in response to this situation. It successfully lobbied Norfolk County by encouraging other community organizations, local politicians, and the public to support the Port Dover Harbour Marina remaining as a publicly owned and operated facility.
Over the years, the issue of governance of the marina has been reviewed numerous times by Norfolk County Staff. In February 2021, Norfolk County received an unsolicited offer to purchase the Port Dover Harbour Marina. The Association submitted letters to Council and to the local newspaper expressing concern regarding the sale of any public waterfront property. In response to public pressure, Council directed Norfolk County Staff to defer any consideration of selling the property. Also, Staff were, once again, directed to investigate various governance models to manage the marina.
The Association considers the Port Dover Harbour Marina as an irreplaceable public waterfront asset. It seems as if its future as a publicly owned and operated facility will continue to be at risk. Thus, the Association must remain vigilant and keep the community well informed so that our marina and waterfront can be enjoyed by all. In response, the Association has formed a Committee to plan and implement this lobbying effort.
